Clinton, Tennessee, was founded in 1801 and originally named Burrville in honor of Aaron Burr, the then-Vice President under Thomas Jefferson. However, due to the disgrace associated with the Burr-Hamilton duel, the Tennessee State Legislature renamed the town Clinton in 1809. The town was established as the county seat of the newly formed Anderson County. Clinton played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement, particularly during the Clinton High School Desegregation Crisis of 1956, when twelve African American students became the first to integrate a state-supported high school in the South.
