How Can I Tell If My Air Conditioning System Needs Repairs?

That’s why it’s so important that the air conditioning system in your home is working properly. If it’s not, your home won’t be as comfortable as you’d like, leaving you and your family hot and sticky.

5 Signs Your AC System May Be Headed for a Breakdown

If you think your air conditioning system isn’t working as well as it should be, it probably isn’t. It’s always better to be safe than sorry and to call your HVAC contractor as soon as you notice something doesn’t seem to be working properly. If you notice any of the following problems with your AC system, it most likely needs to be serviced by a professional. Here’s what to look out for:

  1. Unusual Noises. Is your air conditioning system making sounds that it doesn’t normally make, or has it become louder when it operates? Broken belts, motor issues, and compressor problems can all cause unusual noises. If you notice a difference in the sounds your system is making, such as grinding, squealing, or hissing, it’s likely there is a problem that needs to be addressed by an HVAC technician.

  2. Poor Airflow. If there is a concern with your system, you may notice a decrease in airflow and insufficient cooling. The good news is sometimes poor airflow is a very easy fix – you may simply need to replace a dirty filter. Many times, a clogged filter will inhibit airflow and can make your system have to work harder to keep your home cool. If you check the filter and it isn’t dirty, or if you replace it and there is no improvement, it’s probably time to call your contractor for help.

  3. Increased Utility Bills. If you’ve noticed that your utility bills have been climbing for no good reason, it might be because your air conditioning system is requiring more energy to do the same work it’s always done. Systems that are failing often use much more energy to keep your home cool. So, if you’ve been watching your bills increase, but there is no explanation as to why they should be, your AC system could be the likely culprit.

  4. Frequent Need for Repairs. It kind of goes without saying, but if your system needs frequent repairs, it might not be working as well as it should. This especially goes for older systems and/or systems that have not been properly kept. Unfortunately, once a system needs to be repaired often, it may end up being more cost effective for you as a homeowner to replace it.

  5. Unit is Leaking. If you notice water leaking from your AC system, you should unplug it and give your HVAC contractor a call. Usually, this is a non-dangerous situation and generally can be easily remedied, but if left unchecked it can cause problems for your air conditioner. It’s most likely being caused by a clogged or disconnected drain line, but may also be caused by other concerns, such as a cracked drip pan or frozen evaporator coils. Your technician will know what’s causing the leak and will get it properly fixed for you.
